Challenge Context: Competitive Study Jam
This wasn’t just a Study Jam — it was an architecture competition. The session was built around a simulated client scenario: an event organizer needing to sell high-demand concert tickets online under real latency, concurrency, and cost constraints. Two speakers, one challenge, and at the end, attendees put forward their own architectural blueprints. Best diagrams win.
System Design Methodology & Live Diagramming
The session was divided into complementary technical segments:
- GCP Compute & Storage Spectrum (Co-Speaker James Gabriele) — Reviewing App Engine for managed compute, Cloud Storage for static assets, and Firestore for real-time document sync.
- System Design Methodology & Live Diagramming (Nathan Flores) — How to approach an ambiguous client brief and decompose it into clean tiers (presentation, API gateway, compute workers, database locks, cache). Demonstrated live in draw.io how to construct readable, presentation-ready diagrams with clear data flows.
Results & Participant Architectures
Once the demonstration concluded, attendees were handed an entirely new client specification — their own challenge to solve cold, applying the system design methodology modeled on screen.
Participants produced complete architectures addressing ticket race conditions, seat reservations, and CDN asset offloading. Watching students transition from ‘I don’t know where to start’ to defending a complete cloud architecture in the same afternoon is what hands-on learning is all about.
